2019 Old Vine Rosé of Grenache

2019 Old Vine Rosé of Grenache

Our 2019 Rosé of Old Vine Grenache opens with tantalizing notes of peach, orange blossom, honeysuckle, and white tea. The wine blooms, soft on the palate, with notes of blood orange, stone fruit, and tangy mouth-watering acidity that lingers with notes of minerality on the finish.

The warm, long growing season in the Santa Ynez Valley of Santa Barbara County is about as Provençal as it gets in California. Zaca Mesa was one of the first vineyards planted in the Santa Ynez Valley and this fruit comes from their oldest block of Grenache, planted in 1973. The vineyard is planted against the mountains on a mesa of the northern edge of the Santa Ynez Valley. A relatively warm, elevated site with early ripening and rocky soils, this vineyard is ideal for Grenache, and experiences cool afternoon breezes blowing east from the Pacific through the Santa Rita Hills.

Picked in the cool of the night, grapes typically arrive at the winery by 7 am where they are gently fed into a state-of-the-art inert gas press where the grapes are blanketed with nitrogen during the press cycle and not exposed to any air. The resulting juice is settled to reduce solids then racked to fermentation vessels for a long cool fermentation. The juice is carefully protected at every stage with inert gas to prevent any oxidation and preserve the delicate color, flavor, and aroma. This wine does not see any malolactic fermentation as we want to preserve high natural acidity. This wine is not vegan.
